Why do we light lamps in Karthika Maasa ?

Ever wondered why we light so many lamps in the month of Kartika ?

It’s one day for the Devas, when Earth goes around the Sun in twelve months. Lord Vishnu goes to sleep on Ashadha suddha ekadashi(some time in July) and wakes-up on Karthika suddha ekadashi. That’s why the following day, Karthika Shuddha Dwadashi is observed as ‘utthaana Dwadashi’. In Sanskrit, ‘utthaana’ means ‘waking up’. When Karthika maasa begins, it’s an hour before waking up and is pitch dark for the Devas. That’s the reason we light lamps in the month of Karthika.
